Frauen-Footy kommt in Deutschland in Fahrt. Zahlreiche Events im ganzen Land erhöhen das Interesse am Sport, immer mehr Damen trainieren in den sieben Clubs mit. Nach der erfolgreichen Teilnahme der Hamburg Dockers an der Champions League ist der nächste Schritt, ein Damen-Nationalteam an den Start zu bringen und zur Europameisterschaft in Cork (Irland) zu fahren. Die Entscheidung, wie das Team heißen soll, steht zwar noch aus. Doch eine wichtige Entscheidung wurde jetzt getroffen: Die Ernennung von zwei Trainerinnen. Annie Shewring und Kathryn McKenzie spielen beide bei den Berlin Crocodiles, waren aber auch bei der Champions League im Einsatz. Sie bringen beide vie Erfahrung, Wissen und Positivität in das Team mit.
Das sagen sie selbst dazu:
Annie Shewing – „Ich habe 2015 in Brisbane, Australien, angefangen, Footy zu spielen. Seit dem ersten Spiel, in dem ich gespielt habe, habe ich mich total in die Sportart verliebt. Ich hätte nie gedacht, dass ich einmal auch in Europa spielen würde – an Orten wie Berlin, in Frankreich und in Amsterdam. In den Jahren 2016 und 2017 war ich Teil der Queensland High Performance Frauenakademie, wo ich mit einigen fantastischen Trainern und Spielern trainieren und spielen konnte. Ich freue mich, das Spiel in Deutschland und Europa zu entwickeln, und hoffentlich kann ich etwas Erfahrung aus diesem hochleistungsfähigen Trainings- und Spielumfeld einbringen.“
Kathryn McKenzie – „Nie hätte ich gedacht, dass mir das Frauen aus Arizona einmal das Kicken beibringen würden. Aber nach Jahren als Fan brauchte ich nur ein Training mit den großartigen New York Magpies, um süchtig nach Footy zu werden. Ich kam für den Spaß und blieb für die Unterstützung. Es war so inspirierend, Teil des Teams zu sein und von den anderen Frauen zu lernen. Ich war begeistert, wie die Magpies-Frauen zum Wachstum von Footy in den USA beigetragen haben. Als ich nach Berlin zog, gab es hier kein Frauenteam. Aber die Männer der Crocs hießen mich herzlich willkommen. Und noch der Champions League und unseren Probespielen kommen jede Woche mehr Frauen zum Training. Ein Trend, der hoffentlich anhalten wird. Obwohl ich noch relativ neu in der Sportart bin, freue ich mich, meinen Teil dafür zu tun, Frauen-Footy in Deutschland wachsen zu lassen und freue mich darauf, schon bald eine eigene Frauenliga zu haben. #sidebysid #eatemalive“
Die Nationalspielerinnen sind begeistert, die beiden an Bord zu haben und sind zuversichtlich, dass sie bei ihrem ersten EU-Cup-Turnier einen fantastischen Job machen werden.

Inaugural German National Women’s Australian Football Team Appoint Coaches
2018 sees the growth of Women’s Australian Football in Germany. With a number of events being held around the country we are gaining plenty of interest with more and more women attending training at the 7 German Clubs. After a successful Champions League Tournament where 14 girls from across Germany played under the Hamburg Dockers name, our next challenge is to get the first ever Germany Women’s National Australian Football team to the 2018 Euro Cup in Cork, Ireland. With the decision on the name for the National Team still pending, there is a separate huge step forward the team has achieved and that is the appointment of 2 co-coaches; Annie Shewring and Kathryn McKenzie. Both Annie and Kathryn play with the Berlin Crocodiles and played in the Champions League Tournament and bring a wealth of experience, knowledge and positivity to the team. They had the following to say about their appointments:
Annie Shewing – “I started playing afl in 2015 in Brisbane, Australia.From the first game I played I absolutely fell in love with footy. I never thought i would end up playing AFL in europe – in places like Berlin and France and Amsterdam. In 2016 and 2017 I was part of the Queensland high performance women’s academy where I was able to train and play with some amazing coaching staff and players. I am keen to develop the game in Germany and Europe and hopefully I can bring some experience from this high-performance training and playing environment to this coaching role.”
Kathryn McKenzie – “I never anticipated being taught to drop punt by women from Arizona but after years of being a fan it only took one training with the tremendous women at the New York Magpies for me to be hooked. I came for the fun but stayed for the support. Being part of a team and learning from other women was so inspiring and I’m in awe of how the Mapgie women have been integral to the growth of AFL in the US. When I moved to Berlin there was no women’s team but the men at the Crocs have been nothing but welcoming. After the European Championships and our exhibition matches we are getting more women at training each week which is a trend I hope will continue through 2018. Although I’m new to the sport, I’m so excited to be a small part of helping women’s footy grow in Germany and am looking forward to being able to have our own German league for women in the years to come. #sidebyside #eatemalive”
